Online vs In-Person Hypnotherapy: Which Works Better?

Online hypnotherapy has become much more common — but is it as effective as seeing a therapist in person?

Online hypnotherapy has grown enormously in recent years, accelerated by the pandemic but driven fundamentally by genuine client demand. Many people now prefer online sessions — and the evidence suggests that for the majority of applications, this preference is well-founded.

The most common concern about online hypnotherapy is whether the hypnotic state can be induced as effectively via video call as in person. The honest answer is yes — for most people and most applications. The hypnotic state is primarily a function of the mind's response to guided attention and relaxation, and this process is not fundamentally dependent on physical proximity to the therapist. Provided the connection is stable and you are in a quiet, comfortable space, the conditions for effective hypnotherapy can be replicated online.

Some clients actually find online sessions easier than in-person ones, precisely because they are in their own environment. The familiarity and comfort of home can facilitate relaxation more readily than a consulting room, which may feel clinical or unfamiliar. This is particularly true for clients with social anxiety or those who find the prospect of attending appointments anxiety-provoking in itself.

There are some applications where in-person sessions may offer a slight advantage. For clients who find it very difficult to relax at home due to environmental disruptions, or for more complex work that benefits from the non-verbal attunement that physical presence allows, face-to-face sessions can be preferred. For the majority of common presentations — anxiety, phobias, sleep, habits, confidence — there is no meaningful difference in effectiveness.

Practical advantages of online sessions are significant. No travel time or cost, greater flexibility in scheduling, ability to work with practitioners outside your immediate geographic area, and the option to practise self-hypnosis in the same environment where you have been working therapeutically. For busy professionals or those with mobility or transport limitations, online access to hypnotherapy removes a genuine barrier.

Neil offers both in-person sessions at his West Sussex practice and online sessions via video call, and is happy to discuss which is likely to work best for your individual circumstances and preferences.
